MRI Fusion Guided biopsies of the prostate and MRI-HIFU focal therapy to the prostate
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for greater accuracy in diagnosing and treating prostate cancer with reduced side effects.
The Consultant Urological Surgeons at Bristol Urology Associates are very pleased to offer our patients access to the Gold Standard in both prostate cancer diagnosis and prostate cancer treatment by offering both MRI Fusion Guided biopsies of the prostate for highly accurate diagnosis of prostate cancer and Magnetic Resonance High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (MRI-HIFU) focal therapy for the treatment of prostatic cancer.
Diagnosis: MRI Fusion Guided biopsies of the prostate
The urological surgeon is accurately guided by magnetic resonance imaging and the proficiency of the radiologist in the collection of prostate biopsy specimens.
Treatment: MRI-HIFU focal therapy to the prostate
The urological surgeon is accurately guided by magnetic resonance imaging and the proficiency of the radiologist in delivering high intensity focussed ultrasound to a diagnosed prostatic cancer.
Professor Raj Persad, Consultant Urological Surgeon, who is experienced in these techniques, says:
Diagnosis: “…Although transperineal biopsies are good, the Gold Standard now is fusion biopsy where we fuse the MRI images with the scan on the day. This will allow the most accurate targeted biopsies with minimal side effects…”
Treatment: “…The advantages of focal HIFU treatment are a reduction in side effects both in terms of sexual function and continence. Because areas of the prostate are retained, we will need to maintain follow-up following the procedure…”
